Geckos

Geckos is a progressive climbing club for children from age 5.

As young climbers move through the Geckos sessions, they’ll learn all aspects of indoor climbing, with the goal of becoming confident, well-rounded, and independent climbers.

Geckos Clip

Geckos Clip is a fun, confidence-building Clip & Climb–style session. Using our easy-to-use auto belays, kids can focus on climbing, exploring and having fun in a safe, supportive environment—no experience needed.

Kids Climbing Without an Instructor

If you or your juniors are already experienced and are not looking for a instructed session, please see the options below for how to climb without an instructor.

Supervised by an adult

Under 18s can climb under the supervision of an experienced adult climber, with a maximum ratio of 1 adult to 2 juniors.

Roped Climbing

To supervise roped climbing and auto belays, you must be signed off as roped competent at our centres. This involves a short competency test where we’ll check that you can:

  • Put on a harness correctly
  • Tie in with a suitable climbing knot
  • Set up a belay device and safely belay on top rope
  • Answer questions covering auto belays and bouldering

Bouldering

To supervise bouldering, you must either:

  • Already be signed off as roped competent, or
  • Have plenty of prior bouldering experience and complete our Bouldering Supervisor Assessment. This is a short written check of your knowledge and awareness of safe bouldering practice. It can be taken at any time – just ask a member of staff.

BOOK LEARN TO CLIMB
BOOK SKILLS COACHING

Unsupervised juniors (14+)

Juniors aged 14 and over can climb independently at our centres once they’ve passed the relevant unsupervised assessment.

Bouldering (14+)

If you’re 14 or older and already have plenty of bouldering experience, you can take our Unsupervised Junior Bouldering Assessment. Passing this will sign you off to boulder independently at any of our centres.

  • This written assessment can be done at any time.
  • A parent or legal guardian must be present during the assessment.

Roped Climbing (16+)

From age 16, juniors can be signed off as fully roped competent unsupervised climbers. This requires:

  • A high level of climbing experience (including lead climbing and belaying to a high standard, and safe use of auto belays)
  • Successfully completing a practical assessment with one of our instructors

Please note: juniors cannot supervise other juniors. If you wish to know more or book an assessment, please speak to a member of staff.

Need More Experience?

If you’re not yet ready to pass one of these assessments, we offer sessions to help you build the skills and confidence you’ll need. Juniors looking to get signed off for bouldering should attend a Bouldering Basics session, this will cover everything needed to pass the Unsupervised Junior Bouldering Assessment. For rope climbing please contact your local wall to discuss specific options based on your experience level.
