Experienced Climber

If you wish to climb unsupervised in our centres, or to supervise your children climbing, read on.

WHAT IS A COMPETENT OR EXPERIENCED CLIMBER?

In order to stay safe and have an enjoyable climbing session, we require customers to be, or to be supervised by, an experienced climber aged 18+.

To assess your competency, our reception staff may ask you to some questions appropriate to the type of climbing you are wanting to do (Bouldering or Roped Climbing.)

Please note it usually takes several instructed (or supervised sessions) to become competent. If your previous climbing experience is from a clip and go type activity, or you have only tried climbing once or twice before, it is unlikely that you will yet have the skills to safely supervise others. If you are in any doubt, please call the centre you intend to climb at.

Please be aware if you are unable to demonstrate to the desk staff that you are competent to climb safely at our centre, you may not be able to climb without supervision. We may suggest you book an instructed session, or bring an experienced climbing friend to supervise. NB during busy times, it is unlikely for an instructor available without prior booking.

ADULTS WHO WISH TO SUPERVISE UNDER 18’s & NOVICES.

Adults please note, if your child is a competent climber (but under 18) they still need to be supervised by a competent adult climber. The onus is on the supervising adult to be competent, regardless of the skill or experience of the child.

  • Supervising Bouldering: If your experience is bouldering only we will ask you to complete a questionnaire to become a Bouldering Supervisor. Max ratio 1:2
  • Supervising Roped Climbing: You must be an experienced roped climber yourself in order to supervise your child using the ropes or auto-belays. Max ratio 1:2

We do sometimes have the option of competency sign-offs for Juniors aged 14+. Read more here.

ADULTS WHO WISH TO BOULDER ONLY

  • If you have little or no experience of climbing, but wish to supervise under18’s bouldering, you will need to book a Bouldering Induction+ at the centre of your choice. This 60 minute session will give you all the skills you need to safely supervise children in the bouldering area and includes tips on appropriate warm up, safety and etiquette and some basic movement skills.
